So whatd we tell this parent, you ask? We told this parent that a donation of $10 million would secure him a very nice thank you note from John Hennessy, president of Stanford University. But that a $10 million donation would still not guarantee the parents childs admission to Stanford. Not by a long shot. Additionally, such a donation would have to be made without any contingencies. But when we told the parent this last part, the parent didnt understand. Oh well. You cannot buy your way in as an outsider to highly selective colleges such as Stanford. Can Melinda Gates help a student gain admission to Duke University? You bet. But Melinda Gates is no outsider to Duke University. Shes the ultimate insider, right next to Coach K. Similarly, if your last name is Rockefeller and you want to donate money to Stanford to help your child gain admission, of course itll benefit your childs chances of admission. But was your childs admission really in doubt anyway? Likely not, Mr. Mrs. Rockefeller. For those who have no affiliation with the college to which they now suddenly want to donate money and for those with no history of contributions to this school, money is not going to help. And thats a very good thing! Even if you do have an affiliation or a history of major donations, theres still no guarantee that your kid is going to gain admission. Illegal immigration is often seen as negative to the economy because illegal immigrants do not pay income tax and yet, they still use basic facilities provided by the government. Aside from undocumented immigrants, even the legal immigrants are believed to be a threat to long term residents in Canada. According to Becker, (2001), â€Å"trade unions fear that competition from immigrant labour will result in lower wages Many believe that the welfare state attracts immigrants who mainly seek government benefits and contribute little to production. Other groups worry about the effect of immigration from Third World countries on the racial and ethnic mix of their populations† (Becker, 2001). On the contrary, Li (2003) argues that â€Å"the social worth of immigrants is largely evaluated as their ability to augment the country’s productivity so those already in the country can benefit from immigration. Therefore, immigrants at the very least cannot be burdens to those already in the country (Li, 2003, p. 11). Those who agree with the benefits that immigration will bring to Canada, such as Li, claim that, â€Å"advanced capitalist countries such as the U. S. , Canada, and Australia are benefiting from international migration, especially from draining the highly trained human capital from developing regions of the world† (Li, 2003, p. ). Correspondingly, he also points out that â€Å"enlarging immigration does not only affect Canada’s population and labor force; it can also enrich Canada economically and culturally by bringing technical skills, linguistic diversity, international experiences, as well as investment capital and entrepreneurship† ( p. 77). Comparatively, Friesen also asserts that, â€Å"when immigrants arrive, they not only fill gaps in the work force but pay taxes and spend money on housing, transport and consumer goods. Productive capacity increases and there is a ripple effect across the economy. Studies show that their offspring tend to be among the countrys best-educated and initiative-taking young people† (Friesen, 2012). Thus, the advantages that immigration brings are significant; new ideas and beliefs, technical skills, culture and religion. On a counter argument, Statistics Canada (2008) observed that, established immigrants —those who had lived in Canada for between  11  and  15  years—had more difficulty finding jobs reflecting their educational attainment in  2006  than they did in  1991 (Statistics Canada, 2008). In other words, immigrants tend to be underpaid, and many are unable to acquire work which they are qualified for. In addition, Statistics Canada also says that, â€Å"during this 15-year period, the proportion of long-term immigrants with a university degree in jobs with low education requirements, such as clerks, truck drivers, salespeople, cashiers and taxi drivers, rose steadily† (2008). Correspondingly, Friesen (2013) notes that, â€Å"immigrants earn only about 60% as much as the Canadian-born, whereas in the late 1970s it was nearly 90%, according to research by McMaster economist Arthur Sweetman and former StatsCan director Garnett Picot (Friesen, 2013). This means many new settling immigrants are over qualified for the jobs they perform, and there are some difficulties in recognizing their credentials. However, he later indicates, â€Å"after 10 years in Canada, the immigrant earnings start to approach those of Canadian-born. Among those in prime working years, immigrants are nearly 60% more likely to have a university degree than those born here† (2013). There are some difficulties in conducting the research as the Canadian government announced that it will be taking a ‘temporary pause’ in accepting Federal Skilled Worker applications, and erased all the backlog applications before the year 2008 (CIC News, 2012). Instead, large numbers of foreign temporary workers were brought into Canada annually with a four year work visa. In the case, â€Å"RBC publicly apologizes to employees affected by outsourcing arrangement†, Nash P. noted that, â€Å"according to Immigration figures, the number of temporary foreign workers in Canada as of December 1st was 338,189, more than double the figure seven years earlier. In March, Toronto’s jobless rate stood at 8. 4%, well above the 7. 2% national average† (CBC NEWS, 2013). In other words, under the foreign temporary worker policy, thousands of people are coming into Canada each year regardless of the high unemployment rate today. Similarly, Grant (2013), asserts that, â€Å"there are now 6. 5 unemployed people for every job opening in the country, compared with 6. 1 a year earlier, Statistics Canada data showed this week. Nearly 1. 4 million Canadians are jobless, a slight rise from a year ago. † (Grant, Globe and Mail, 2013). Now the question is, how will the boost of temporary workers influence Canada’s economy? Grant continued, â€Å"while economists and researchers agree the program has sparked a range of negative side effects, they say it’s tough to quantify the precise effect on the labour market, and on the economy. But in the long run, it leaves the country with workers who are less trained, with less experience and fewer opportunities† (2013). In conclusion, Friesen (2013) says that, â€Å"temporary workers lack the stability to set down roots and build communities, and are often separated from their families. After four years theyre required to go home, but there are estimates of a growing group, perhaps a few hundred thousand, who have overstayed their visas and now live undocumented in Canada† (Friesen, 2013). He believes that permanent migration is far more desirable than the rapid expansion of the temporary work force, and replacing temporary workers with permanent immigration would be a more stable solution for Canada’s economy. Despite the obstacle conducting this research, it is evident that immigration brings many advantages to Canada’s society and economy. Francis concludes, â€Å"the arguments which are in favor of large scale immigration believe that population growth always enhances economic growth, and Canada should rely on immigration to help solve the aging and baby boomers problems. Immigration also maintains Canada’s population growth, since a sustainable population growth seems to be essential and vital to economic development. Furthermore, immigration will overcome the negative demographic effects of Canada’s aging population with its pressure on government services such as health care and senior pensions. Bringing more immigrants into the country helps improve the relationship between Canada and other countries worldwide, which could result in more international trade. The counter arguments include fearing that visible minorities will outnumber the ative ‘European Canadians’, and bringing immigrants to the country costs taxpayers more money to support them with services such as health care and education, and immigration will cause more Canadian’s to be unemployed (Francis, 2002). Christianity and Islam are two of the world?s largest religions. The two are different in beliefs but are similar in origin. Like many religions both Islam and Christianity claim to be the one and only true way to God. Although Islam and Christianity differ in major ways, they also share some similarities. Islam teaches that in order to achieve true peace of mind and surety of heart, one must submit to God or ?Allah? and live according to His revealed Law. Being a Muslim requires willful submission and active obedience to God and living in accordance with His message. Conversely, Christianity does not teach absolute submission to God, but teaches that man is sinful and can never inherit eternal life in the presence of God as a result of the sins of our first parents, Adam and Eve, as well as our own personal sin. Therefore it became necessary for God to become man in the person of Jesus Christ, who as the Son of God was sinless and unblemished. His purpose was to suffer and die in atonement for the sins of all whom accept his sacrifice for sin. Throughout History there has been some conflict between both religions, one of the major events is called the Crusades. The First Crusade was from 1096 to 1099. They were Christian military expeditions and religous wars proclaimed by the people. The purpose of the Crusades was to gain and keep control over Palestine from the Muslims. Palestine was also called the Holy Land because Jesus lived there. Alexius Compenus was a new ruler that came into power in Byzantium in 1081. Constentinople was in danger because the Turks threatened them, so Alexius first called for help to Pope Urban ll who presented a ten-day meeting telling people about Alexius's problem and that they needed to go to war with the Turks, which led to the first Crusade. The Crusades were organized mostly to recover or defend territories that Christians strongly beleived belonged to them by right, such as "The Holy Land." Palestine lay along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean sea, and Muslims had taken control of it from the Christians. In the first Crusade, Christians recaptured Palestine, but in the later Crusades, they fought to protect Palestine or recover parts of it that had been lost to Muslim forces. After reviewing documents of crusaders it is easy to see that most went to battle because they were easily persuaded to do anything for God, they felt a true hatred for the others, as well as the sense of importance and nobility the soldiers gained from going to battle. Crusades played a major role in the High Middle Ages and even though they were not terribly successful, they still are very famous historical figures. This act of God was to help deal with the internal and external conflict that the Roman Church was having in trying to remain in power. However, it also displays that people of this time were very susceptible to persuasion and even propaganda. This period of time truly emphasizes how far people will go in order to obtain power.

Irving Berlin Free Online Research Papers Irving Berlin was born in the poverty stricken town of Tyumen, Russia. He was born on May 11th, 1988 and his birth name was Israel Baline. He was the youngest of 9 children born to Moses and Leah (Lena) Baline. In 1893, escaping Russian persecution, the Baline’s fled to America and settled in the lower East side of New York. Baline’s father was a shochel for the Jewish synagogue in Russia and after arriving in New York he was forced to work in local markets. The Baline children had to work selling newspapers to help the family, like so many other immigrated families had to do. Shortly after his fathers death in 1896, Baline ran away from home. After leaving home, Baline earned money by singing at popular cafes and restaurants in the Bowery. Baline was hired as a singing waiter at Pelham’s in 1906. There he met a co-worker by the name of â€Å"Nick† Nicholson. Pelham asked Nick to write a song and Baline to write the lyrics to outdo to employees at a rival cafà © that had written and published a song. The two of them titled the song Marie of Sunny Italy. To introduce the song, Baline often sang the song while working. It quickly became popular with the customers in Pelham’s. Stern had decided to publish the song and when they read the cover they noticed a printing error that had changed Baline’s name to Irving Berlin. Not wanting to cause any more confusion than necessary, Baline stuck with the error and from that moment on was known to the world as Irving Berlin. To have had no formal musical education in his life, his musical career was becoming successful. He earned thirty-seven cents in royalties for the song Marie of Sunny Italy. In 1908, Berlin accidentally wrote a melody for a potent al song, which was later called Dorando. Berlin was offered 25 dollars for a completed copy of the song. Since he did not know how to write or play music, he hired an arranger to compose to melody for the lyrics. Using the same arranger he had hired, he also completed the song The Best of Friends Must Part. Berlins lyrics were becoming so famous that the New York Journal hired him to write some verses. He wrote the lyrics to many of Americas most patriotic songs. One which was dedicated as our country national anthem, God Bless America. Berlin’s music was starting to boom and his life was now something different from what he had known as a child, Berlin had money and lots of it. Though he had money and fame something was missing from his life that he wasn’t aware was missing, love. A young woman by the name of Dorthy Goetz had come to his office one day begging for a copy of any one of Berlins songs for her to sing. Before Goetz could get all the words out of her mouth, another woman came into Berlins office begging for a song as well. Goetz was a quiet and shy woman but after seeing the desperate woman pleading for a song that all changed. Afraid that she wouldn’t get the copy she so desperately wanted, she grabbed the other woman by the hair and they began to fight. Shocked by what was happening in his office, Berlin attempted to break up the two young women but was unsuccessful. When the fighting finally ended, he gave the copy to the other woman and asked Dorthy out on a date. After what w as a short courtship, the two got married in February, 1913. The spent their honeymoon in Cuba which would later yield a terrible mistake. At the time of their honeymoon, a horrible case of typhoid had spread throughout Cube. Immediately after returning from the honeymoon, Dorthy became ill. Deep in love with his new bride, Berlin tried desperately to get his wife better. He had 2 full time doctors in the home caring for Dorthy; however, in a time when antibiotics didn’t exist there was nothing they could do to save her. Dorthy passed away in July of 1913. Berlin feel into a deep depression. While he was mourning the lose of his wife, he wrote one of his biggest hits When I Lost You. Berlin would wait many years before we would marry again, twelve to be exact. In 1926 Berlin married Ellin Mackay, the daughter of Postal Telegraph Company CEO, Clarence Mackay. Ellins father contested the marriage which was publicly announced often. Despite his disapproval the two secretly marri ed. They had 4 children throughout their marriage, Irving Jr., Linda Louise, Mary Ellin and Elizabeth Iris. Berlins fame soared with his first complete score Watch Your Step, in 1914. During WW II, he felt that it was important to show first hand the lives of the soldiers so he wrote This is the Army. The show raised $10 million and all of the proceeds went to the Army Emergency Relief fund. Following the war, Berlin wrote numerous songs for the American Red Cross. February 18, 1955, President Eisenhower presented Berlin with a gold medal for composing so many of Americas patriotic songs. Berlin also assigned the copyright for â€Å"God Bless America† to the God Bless America fund, which raises money for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts throughout America. In a biography published in 1924, songwriter Jerome Kern stated â€Å" Irving Berlin had no place in American music. He is American music†. Irving Berlin died on September 22, 1989 at the age of 101. Currently, twisted or plaited cotton makes up most of the wicks. The candlestick is made of steel, or could also be made of metal. The functional unit will be a 125ml candle able to generate up to 25 hours of light. Each steel-made candlestick can only hold one candle, and can be used several times. For example, soy and beeswax candle emit fewer harmful chemicals when burned. Another way to reduce pollution is to buy from local candlemakers. This reduces wasteful packaging, and there is no need to transport raw materials to a farther manufacturing plant, and to consumers at longer geographical distances.
